MRE advice
I'm adding to our pantry, for when we have another ice storm of course:wink:, and realized it would be handy to have a couple cases of MRE's. I see from Wikipedia that they've changed alot since I was in ('84-'91). Those 2nd generations were much better; I even ate an entire case sans condiments in one sitting to win a bet.
I see online that there are military type MRE's now and even some of the real things. What do you recommend & where do I get them? Thanks |
Re: MRE advice
GWT, go to general discussion click on "survival preps" sub forum, many good threads there.
Be careful of the salt and additives in MREs, as an option check out the dried and freeze dried foods from rainy day they'll last 30yrs.+.... sold by folks like Honneyville , Frugal squirrel , safe castel royal and emergency essentials . |
Re: MRE advice

Re: MRE advice
Thanks guys.
Yup, back when I was "young and dumb and ..." but now I can think of many better ways to consume $70 worth of chow; wow $70 a case, I am old. Heck, we couldn't give them away. It shouldn't surprise you what young men will do for entertainment when sitting in the middle of a desert for weeks on end. Looking for a place to bugout to, go to NorthEast Saudi, there's got to be megatons of chow & equipment buried over there; and if you dig up what looks to be a desicated fudge bar don't eat it, it's not. Anyway, I was hoping for someones experienced advice as to which menus to grab if I decide to cherry pick the best ones. |
Re: MRE advice
I usually get the sopacko brand MRE's. Been really happy with them so far.

Re: MRE advice
With the Hurricanes down here, I have ended up with a pallet load of these things, heck, Cajuns have fish and shrimp to eat, MREs are distained down here for the most part, inherited most of the throw aways of the relatives.
Ready to survive for a year or more on the cheap. |

Honestly? I would reccomend another comany. MREDepot's "handling" charge is obvious gauging. The shipping cost UPS Ground should have been about $58, NOT the $98 they charged me for UPS Ground shipping. Of course, the "shipping and handling" charge did not appear in the order until I was at the last screen where you push "Place order". Just sharing my experience! :favorites21: |

BTW, slightly OT, but prepackaged meals could conceivably become a form of currency in a future bartering scenario. It's already happened in prison, where packaged mackerel are known as "macks" and used in place of cigs now for currency: Quote:

What i use to hike with is lipton sides like mac and cheese and beef lo mein
powdered eggs and beef jerky dehydrated hash browns are great and available at gordon foods in cartons. also at gordon powdered cheese to go with everything from eggs to macaroni or with tortilla chips. you have to have alittle cooking oil for the eggs energy bars and stuff like that. I have also used a PEPSI CAN STOVE with heet fuel line deicer as fuel... google that |
